ItŐs the Start of Another Year: Introduction
of Members and Guests
An overview of the development of the Coalition and the activities
to date were presented by Michael Becherer. Michael informed the
members that Marilynn Jackson is resigning as Project Director and
Dale Gillilan would be filling that position in mid October.
WhatŐs Happening with Our Youth:
Betty Miller presented a report on the Youth Work Group. The Coalition
sponsored 6 students from 3 local high schools to attend the Points
of Light Leadership Institute this summer. She introduced two members
of the Youth Group that completed PYLI: Casey Coupdriak and Marquee
Lucas. Both students shared their experiences at the Institute and
presented the community project that the students chose to participate
in. A Canned Food Drive project is scheduled for November 1-17 involving
Kenai, Skyview, and Nikiski High Schools. The students are hoping
that the friendly competition will bring in a large number of canned
goods for the Food Bank. The winning school will receive a trophy
to display at their school until the next annual All Schools Food
Drive.
Community Profile:
Judy Downs reported on the progress of the Community Profile Report
that is scheduled for completion by the first of October. A meeting
is scheduled with the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District’s
Administrators to discuss the Report, including the Prevention Needs
Assessment data. Jon Walters and the PR work group will be meeting
to discuss a PR plan to disseminate the report to the community.
It's All About the Family:
Regina Theisen shared information about Family Day on September
25, 2006. She discussed the participating restaurants and grocery
stores, full-page ad in the Peninsula Clarion, and passed out brochures
and samples of the table tents that will be used in the local sponsoring
restaurants.
What's Next:
Michael review the calendar of events for the next 2 months and
distributed copies to everyone. Important events include the Town
Hall meeting on November 7th with special guests, Landon Gibbs and
Sherry Seigel, MD. The next general meeting will be in December,
when nominations and elections for new board members will occur.
Meeting concluded at 6:00 pm.
Respectfully submitted by Judy Downs.
